Triple Goddess: Maiden/Mother/Crone Part 4, Crone

I waited for the waning Moon to write this, for the waning Moon is Crone time…

The Dark Goddess. The Dark Mother. The Wise One. The Night. Endings and beginnings. The point where all life rests before rebirth. She is the Great Initiator into the deepest of Mysteries and prophecies. She IS the Triple Goddess, All and One at the same time. Goddess of the crossroads. She is the Knower. She is the Liberator of women.

The Dark Goddess has been since ancient times. The term Dark is more about what the Goddess represents.

“ For many modern witchcraft traditions, Hecate is the Dark Goddess and associated with the spirits of the dead, ghosts, the dark of the moon, baneful herbs, curses and black magic. For others, the Crone Goddess is Hecate, ruling over the third stage of a woman’s life, that beyond her childbearing years when she can focus on deepening the skills and information collected throughout her lifetime, when knowledge and experience is refined into Wisdom. The name Hecate is difficult to decipher, but may mean “she who operates from afar” or “far reaching”. It may also be related to the name of the Egyptian Goddess Heqet which sounds similar, especially in the Early Modern English pronunciation of Hecate, which left off the concluding “e“.”

The concept of Maiden, Mother, Crone is more or less a neo pagan concept that in my opinion, fairly marries the stages or aspects of the cycle of life through the eyes of the Divine Feminine Force pretty well, albeit at the cost of turning the Great Goddess into a bit of a demigod. Author Robert Graves is credited with giving life to this concept in his book White Goddess. The term Crone is, and has been debatable. The fact that the third aspect of the Goddess in three forms is represented by an old hag lady or Crone, makes some people respond negatively. The way that I see it is this; as times changes, so do concepts. Trivia Goddesses is not a new way of thinking however, referring to the Great Goddess in this way wasn’t introduced until the 20th century. So, for one to be taken seriously when writing or even commenting on matters like this, historical evidence needs to be the basis of the argument. In the case of Graves, his Triple Goddess concept was not wholly supported by historical fact. As a matter of fact, in ancient times, upon the many tablets and other records, the Goddess was never portrayed as elderly. She was always full of vibrant youth or she was mature as a mother, but never elderly. I totally get why that is. In my experience the Great Goddess is never feeble in any way. She has the wisdom and the heart of an aged woman, but she is always vibrant, even feral. So to justify the triad and age the Goddess is to somewhat defy or over simplify who the Great Goddess is.

The so called Crone Goddess though does give us a doorway to understanding the deep knowing and wisdom often gained with age and time. This wisdom can be accessed at any age and stage of anyone’s life, yet in time, we experience it quite naturally when we reach a certain chronological age. Do not be fooled however. She is depicted old, with a wart on her nose. She is depicted as the evil witch in the deep forest waiting to exact cruel intentions on any unfavorable soul that dare cross her path… This is not who she is. This imagery is due to Christian patriarchal fear of the transformative powers of the Dark Goddess and anyone who followed Her ways. She was turned into an evil witch because she is the Liberator. She is NOT the destroyer as fear would dictate.

Crone Goddess energy is most available under the waning to dark moon. The Moon is dark. It has no natural light source of its own, it reflects the Sun. so, in fact the dark “side” of the Moon is beloved Luna in her truest form. Therefore, the Dark Moon, Crone time, is when we can access our truest nature.

She is the Great Alchemist able to transform any being from a base metal into Gold.

The Crone is the Keeper of the Mysteries of prophecies. Access the energy of the Crone when you wish to expand your clairvoyance and ability to see more clearly backward and forward through time. Crone energy is available when you want to end a thing. A relationship, or any cycle of some sort. Just like the other aspects of the Triple Goddess, Crone flows into Maiden seamlessly. The Crone Goddess is there to break things down and end them so that the Maiden can put the pieces of the matrix together in a new way. When we get in flow with Mother energy, we get the nurturing and guidance that we need for our journey. When Mother energy has taken us as far as She can at any particular time, it is the Crone Goddess energy that calls to us. It is at that time, in order to progress with our “stuff”, we are plunged into the dark, cold, cauldron of regeneration. It is there that we come to terms with our true selves and our truest motives. Through the dark, we see the light. Only then can true Gold be achieved.

Many of us are afraid of the dark. Afraid to meet ourselves in the shadowy parts of the mind, which is why many people get lost in the dark and never find their way out. Always searching outside of themselves blaming, and looking away, looking anywhere but inside of themselves as the beginning point of transformation. The Crone Goddess will not come for you, we all must seek her at any and all stages of transformation. She governs the realm that holds the dark parts of ourselves that we seldom want to admit, let alone access. Physical death is apart of life’s cycles. We go from the Crone’s cauldron of recycle out into existence, then after a time return again. This is true in the non physical as much as in the physical sense.

Dark Moon ( Crone) Magick

Mirror meditation

Contacting spirits

Dark Magick i.e., bindings, cursing

When doing candle magic or using candles in magick to invoke the Crone Goddess use black ones. Her number is nine or multiples of nine, which is said to symbolize wisdom and sacred magick. She rules the darkest night of the Moon every month. Dark Moon energy is a time to access the deepest mysteries of existence, sorcery, prophecy, and secrecy.

Crone magick can be infused with any magickal practice and general rituals.

Access Crone energy when you wish to:

  • End something. A job. A relationship. A cycle. Divorce.

  • Rest and recreation of your life or a thing.

  • When you are being harassed in any way. She is the Great Protectress.

  • When you seek retribution

  • For strong protection against mental and physical attacks

  • To understand the deepest mysteries

Be warned. The Dark Moon is a time when the veil is thinner between two worlds therefore it is not a time for the unpracticed and foolish. Protect yourself with circles, stones and other correspondences that help ward and protect when practicing any magick that involves journeying between two worlds.

I think that will cover it for now. As I write this, we are under the waning Moon. February 25th the Moon will be its darkest, the 26th the Moon becomes New again. As the Crone blends into the Maiden, so the Dark Moon into the New Moon. Take this time to meditate on Crone Goddess energy and ask yourself if now is the time in your life when you are ready for a remix. If so, begin your descent to the inner labyrinth where Crone energy will meet you and guide you through the process of soul alchemy and transformation. Blessed journey!

In part 5 of this series I will list rituals that can be practiced to invoke/evoke each individual aspect of the Great Triple Goddess. I hope that this did resonate with you. If so, “like” it, and let me know below in the comments section. If you have anything that you would like to add feel free to do so in the comment section.

Thanks for reading. You may also share this if you’d like to begin or continue a discussion amongst your friends.

Until next time. Blessed be. Ase.

Triple Goddess: Maiden-Mother-Crone Part 3 The Mother

I have been enjoying the series. I hope that you have gained a deeper understanding of the Great Goddess. If you have flown to this page without having read the previous post I encourage you to do so. You can find part 2 of this series HERE.

Perhaps the most recognizable of the three faces of the Triple Goddess is the Goddess as Mother. The Mother is the embodiment of universal law. She is the Divine Source of life itself. The Mother is happiness and enthusiasm for life. Known as the Great Teacher of Mysteries, she is the ripening of all things. She is the re creation of life in all its forms. She is the churning cauldron of life. The highest point of all cycles. Her domain is the ripeness of womanhood or adulthood. She is summer time. The day. Reproduction. Creation in all forms. Her colour is red. She is the life force. Full Moon. The fullness of menstrual cycle. The urge to procreate. She is the Creatress. Earth Mother. Her knowledge is the treasure of the inner maze.

Just as with the other aspects of the Goddess, Goddess as Mother can be experienced by anyone at any stage of life. Mother is present when we take responsibility for ourselves. Just as our natural mothers teach us how to be honest with ourselves and to own our stuff, so the Goddess nurtures us in this way. Mother Goddess teaches us patience, self-discipline, and self-respect. Mindlessly flowing through life, mistreating ourselves and allowing others to mistreat us is not what Mother Goddess wants for us. When we acknowledge and seek to commune with the Goddess as Mother, she teaches us how to love ourselves deeper therefore creating a positive reflection for others to love us productively. In short, when we know how to love ourselves, we can teach others how to love us.

When we need guidance and understanding, mother energy is available to us. She holds the treasures. Mother energy seeks to help and heal us and our situations. In order to change our communities and by in large the world, we have to go beyond our own earthly pursuits and think of others. We need to think of ways to lighten someone’s else’s load and be helpful in our own ways. This is what Mother energy is all about.

Many folks are cut off from Mother energy, whether of their own accord or by a series of unfortunate circumstances. These people live lonely lives. This inability to give love creates an energy loop that then prevents them from receiving love. The adage goes, and I know to be true, to be loved, we must know how to love…

Mother energy guides those of us who seek, into the Divine Center of self where She waits for us. In life there will be pain and unsettling affairs that we encounter on our path. Often these experiences cause a ripple effect of lessons. To be more patient, to listen more, to be more disciplined etc. These things must be. Mother energy is present at these times. She wants us to learn and to grow because she is the ultimate nurturer.  Her love is unconditional.

If the Maiden energy is the promise of what could be, Mother energy is the assurance of what is.

Mother energy is represented by the color red to represent fullness and life force. Mother magick should be worked under the full moon. Mother energy is present when you seek spiritual direction. Mother energy is present when someone is giving birth to a child physically. Mother energy is present and available when seeing a project through to completion. Mother energy is also present when planting or tending to a garden.

If you choose to, when the moon is full, have a ritual bath and evoke the Goddess as Mother.  Run a hot bath. You can add rose petals, lavender flowers, sea salt. Alternatively, you could add this magnificent Aphrodite Bath Soak. While the bath tub is filling, bring a couple of candles into the bathroom. You may want to play soft soothing music as well. Maybe burn incense. Whatever you do to create sacred bath time. Aside from the candles that you will be bringing into the bathroom to burn during this ritual bath, bring a red candle also.  Before you ease into the bath tub, carve the words that relate to what you wish to manifest with the assistance of Mother energy, along the length of the candle. Place the red candle in such a way that you can watch it burn as you sit in the tub. Light the candle and enter the bath tub. Take a few slow deep breaths. Feel the healing comfort that the botanicals are releasing. Smell the fragrance, and just be. After you have settled in, visualize the thing that you wish Mother Goddess to assist you with. See it turning out exactly how you wish it to. Stay with the image in your mind and feel the happy feelings that you will feel when it happens. If you want to you could say these words, or something similar.

  • Mother Goddess on this candle words of fire spell out the words of my desire. Take these things and give them wings as they descend from thoughts to things, take these things and make them real mother Goddess your love I can feel.

When you’re ready, you can open your eyes. Continue to sit, relax and enjoy this time for yourself. If you finish your bath before the red candle burns out extinguish the flame between your moistened index finger and thumb. You can relight the candle at anytime in a different area of your house the next time of meditation and contemplation. *never burn candle unattended. Never burn candles near open windows or curtains. Practice safe candle magick folks!

Herbs that represent Mother Goddess are:

Gaining knowledge and understanding of the hidden mysteries of life are imperative for a fulfilled life. Sit at the feet of Mother as She teaches us of our own Divinity. She is available to show us the mysteries of the cycles of life, and the universe. Spend time seeking her wisdom.

I hope that you gained something from this post. If you did, tell me about it in the comments. We learn and grow from one another. I would love to dialogue about it.

Part 4 in this series will be all about the Crone aspect of the Triple Goddess. Until then. Blessed be. Ase.

Triple Goddess: Maiden-Mother-Crone Part 2 The Maiden

The great Creatress. The Goddess. The Divine Feminine that seeks to create balance for us all is calling from deep within you, deep within me. She desires to remind us of our Oneness. The Triple Goddess is the three faces or even phases of our human life. She is woven into the human subconscious and our collective unconscious. Just as we experience Sun and Moon, light and dark, up and down, on and off and so on, the The Great Goddess represents the Yin energy and flow, to the Yang energy and flow. This Oneness is achieved when we decide to alter our current thought and spiritual processes and consciously incorporate Goddess into our lives.

Let’s continue along this path, learning more and understanding the three faces of the Great Goddess, this post (part 2) will plunge into the depths of the first face of the Triple Goddess, the Maiden.

In part 1 of this series we scratched the surface of understanding who the Triple Goddess is. Now, let’s look at each aspect individually.  If you have not yet read part 1, please do so before continuing on.

It is very fitting that today’s post be all about the Maiden Goddess. We are currently under the waxing moon and She, the Maiden IS the Goddess of the waxing moon! Makes me feel so aligned! Ok, let’s get into this juicy topic.

No matter our age we experience the aspects of the Goddess in our minds whenever we choose to. Learning to recognize which and when, is something I think is important. Maiden is usually depicted as youth and virginal. Maiden energy can be experienced at any life stage by anyone, male or female, at any time. The same for Mother Goddess and Crone Goddess energy.

Maiden energy is flowing when we need a breath of fresh air, mentally speaking. When it’s time to move forward and we aren’t sure which path to take Maiden energy is present. New ideas. New beginnings. The Huntress. Spring time. In the constant cyclical flow of birth, death and rebirth of all types, the Maiden is the continuing. The One who shows the way. The Virgin. Virgin not in the physical state. In this way it is meant to mean independent. It means that the Maiden belongs only to herself.

Through the eyes of the Maiden we see beauty in all things. We can see the magick in nature. On a rainy day, have you ever watched rain drop into a small puddle? Did you stare if even for a moment, to see the ripple that the drops make? Did you notice how the ripple is perfectly round and seems to dance on top of the water? The desire to pause and notice such a thing is Maiden energy at play within you. The affinity for a golden sunset and the contemplation that the experience can evoke…you guessed it, Maiden energy.

Maiden energy is represented by the color white to project newness, clarity, and purity. Maiden magick can be done simply by lighting a white candle, and meditating on the intent you wish to project into the cosmos. Get into Maiden flow when starting a new job or when you are moving to a new home. Welcome Maiden energy when a new baby comes into your life, or even when you hold someone else’s baby. Embrace the powerful creative force and newness of Maiden energy.

You can if you choose to, get a white candle. Carve along the length of the candle words that represent what you want to manifest. Light the candle and sit quietly. Close your eyes and sit with the energy and visualize the things being manifested just as you would like for them to be. Stay with the feeling, stay with the image that you see. Once you feel ready open your eyes. If you want you can leave the candle burning at this time to burn out or you can extinguish it to be lite at the next time of meditation and contemplation. *never burn candle unattended. Never burn candles near open windows or curtains. Practice safe candle magick folks!

Herbs that represent the Maiden Goddess are: wild flowers, basil, rosemary, nutmeg and vanilla.

The Maiden is known by many names across the cultures of the world. A few of them are listed here.

Artemis, Greek

Maat, Egyptian

Brigid, Ireland

Parvati and Maya, India

These are only a few. I invite you to do your own research on the Maiden Goddess in the pantheons of the world. No matter where in the world the Maiden is represented the truest archetypal frame is present. Maiden energy is alive and is hunting through our collective consciousness ready to make waste of the parts of ourselves that no longer serve us and usher us into  newness and growth.

The Keys of life are all important on this journey. The Maiden is The Keeper of Keys. Behind the doors of our inner selves lies the Divine. The Keeper of Keys has what we need to access this Divinity. We need Her energy to advance even the slightest in thought and actions. Spend some time to meditate on the Maiden aspect of the Triple Goddess and consciously activate Her power more regularly. Look for her when experiences arise.

I hope that this resonates with you. Do commune with the Maiden and learn more. In part 3 we will look closer into the face of the Mother Goddess aspect of the Triple Goddess. Until then, many blessings. Please comment and share your thoughts and feelings. I’d love to hear from you.
